Our Lady of Guadalupe

Welcoming everyone to proclaim and live the joy of the Gospel.

Why is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe Important?

On December 12, 1531 a brown-skinned Mary figure (affectionately called the dark one – La Morenita) appeared to an indigenous indian named Juan Diego.  During this apparition, she gave us a beautiful picture of herself; this event galvanized the eventual conversion of millions of indigenous people to Catholicism over a few decades.  The celebration of this feast day marks the time Christianity was brought to the Americas; it is considered the Pentecost of the Western Hemisphere.

The Sacred image of Our Lady was miraculously imprinted on the cloak/poncho (Tilma) of Juan Diego when he carried the flowers he had gathered from the Hill where Our Lady appeared. To this day, the symbols and materials used to create the image are a miracle and a gift from God. The way Our Lady appeared on the tilma was the only way to communicate her significance to the Aztecs. Through the powerful symbols of her dress, God presented her so that the people would recognize Our Lady. The meaning of the sun and stars, the hand placement and the sash indicate she was with child. These and many other incredible symbols in the image spoke directly to the people’s hearts.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is the title of the Blessed Virgin Mary associated with a Marian apparition and a venerated image enshrined within the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The basilica is the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world, and the world’s third most-visited sacred site. Pope Leo XIII granted the venerated image a Canonical Coronation on October 12, 1895.  Her title of “Empress of the Americas” was granted on October 12, 1945 by Pope Pius XII, in commemoration of the crowning of the miraculous Liapicture at the command of Leo XIII, 50 years earlier.
