Elementary Faith Formation

Jesus said, "Let the children come to me and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

-Matthew 19:14

Elementary Faith Formation is offered on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings from September-May for children preschool through grade five. The curriculum for each grade integrates the fundamental themes of the Catechism of the Catholic Church with Scripture and Catholic Social Teachings. Children share their own life experiences, listen to the Gospel and build Christian community while participating in experiential activities that encourage lifelong practice in the faith. Weekly classroom sessions incorporate the use of prayer, scripture, catholic social teaching and liturgy. In addition, all preschool, kindergarten and elementary students participate in monthly and seasonal service activities to aid people in need locally and globally.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) program is another approach to the religious formation of elementary level children. Based on the conviction that God and the child are in relationship, CGS is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the Church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. Children gather in an “atrium,” a room prepared for them, which contains simple yet beautiful materials that they use in their formation. It is their religious space, designed as a hands-on place of preparation for involvement in the larger worshipping community.

There are three levels of CGS

  • Level I: ages 3-1/2 to 6
  • Level II: ages 6 to 9
  • Level III: ages 9-12
