The Lord Hears the Cry of the Poor.
Throughout the Bible, rich men are often portrayed as evil ones who take advantage of the poor. Other stories commend those who have little yet share it with others. Does that mean God favors the poor over everyone else? Will those of us who have some material comfort in this life be ignored by God?

God loves each and every one of us. Yet those who have nothing often seek God the most, calling out to Him in their hours of need. And He listens to them. To put that in perspective, think of parents with multiple children. They love all their children. But when one is in danger or has an emergency, the parents give their attention to that child first. It doesn’t mean they love their other children less. At other times, the other children will be the ones in need and will be the priority for the parents. In much the same way, God hears the cry of the poor - those who need His attention more at this particular moment.

Poor doesn’t always mean lacking money or basic necessities. People can be poor in spirit. Look at the tax collector in today’s gospel. We assume he was a rich man who probably cheated others to gain more wealth. Regardless of his circumstance, the tax collector humbles himself before God and acknowledges his sinfulness. God hears the depth of his anguish much more clearly than the pompous prayer of the Pharisee. The tax collector reveals his need for God in his life.

The Mini Message
To be poor is to be in need. It doesn’t matter if the need is physical or spiritual. God hears the anguished cries of the poor looking to Him for help and hope.

El Señor Escucha el Clamor de los Pobres.
A lo largo de la Biblia, los hombres ricos a menudo son presentados como malvados que se aprovechan de los pobres. Otras historias elogian a aquellos que tienen poco y aún así lo comparten con otros. ¿Significa eso que Dios favorece a los pobres más que a los demás? ¿Ignorará Dios a aquellos que tienen mucha comodidad material?

Dios nos ama a todos y cada uno de nosotros. Sin embargo, aquellos que no tienen nada a menudo buscan a Dios, llamándolo en sus horas de necesidad. Y Él los escucha. Para ponerlo en perspectiva, piense en unos padres con muchos hijos. Ellos aman a todos sus hijos, pero cuando uno de ellos está en peligro o tiene una emergencia, los padres le prestan atención a ese hijo primero. Eso no significa que amen menos a sus otros hijos. En otras ocasiones, los otros hijos serán los necesitados y serán la prioridad para los padres. De la misma manera, Dios escucha el clamor de los pobres, aquellos que en un momento en particular necesitan más de Su atención.

Pobre no siempre significa falta de dinero o de necesidades básicas. Las personas pueden ser pobres de espíritu. Mira al recaudador de impuestos en el evangelio de hoy. Asumimos que era un hombre rico que probablemente engañó a otros para lograr más riqueza. Independientemente de su circunstancia, el recaudador de impuestos se humilla ante Dios y reconoce su vida de pecado. Dios escucha la profundidad de su angustia más claramente que la oración pomposa del fariseo. El recaudador de impuestos revela su necesidad de Dios en su vida.

El Mini Mensaje
Ser pobre es estar en necesidad. No importa si la necesidad es física o espiritual. Dios escucha los gritos de angustia de los pobres que buscan ayuda y esperanza en Él.
