Serve the Lord with Gladness
Today’s readings provide two very different approaches to serving God. In the first reading, Abraham eagerly runs out to meet the travelers (the Lord in disguise). He humbly pleads with them to stay and rest for a while. Abraham tells the men he will bring them a snack, yet he and Sarah deliver a feast. They serve the men and tend to their needs with gladness. The Lord rewards their service with a son.
Martha, in the gospel reading, handles things differently. While she initially welcomes Jesus, Martha soon gets caught up in the chores of providing hospitality to her guests. You can imagine her getting more and more upset, perhaps even banging a plate or two, as her frustration level increases. When she has finally had enough, she speaks up to her guest! Martha has just added rudeness to her feelings of anger and irritation. Overwhelmed by the activities of serving her guest, she has forgotten who her guest is. In doing so, she ignored the basic rules of hospitality. And because of that, Martha is reprimanded by Jesus.
So how do we serve the Lord as represented by each person we encounter every day? Do we interact with kindness or grumble at the chore? Do we offer a feast or the bitter food of our complaints? Knowing that the Kingdom of Heaven awaits His faithful servants, we should be serving the Lord with gladness.
The Mini Message:
While our calling is to serve the Lord through one another, we have a choice in how we accomplish the task. Those that serve with gladness will be rewarded in the best way.

Sirve al Señor con alegría.
Las lecturas de hoy ofrecen dos enfoques muy diferentes de cómo servir a Dios. En la primera lectura, Abraham se apresura a reunirse con los viajeros (el Señor disfrazado). Humildemente les ruega que se queden y descansen un rato. Abraham les dice a los hombres que les traerá un refrigerio; pero en cambio, él y Sarah les ofrecen un banquete. Ellos sirven a los hombres y atienden sus necesidades con alegría. El Señor les recompensa su servicio con un hijo.
En el evangelio, Martha, maneja las cosas de manera diferente. Aunque inicialmente le da la bienvenida a Jesús, Martha pronto se ve atrapa-da en las tareas de brindar hospitalidad a sus invitados. Podemos imaginarla cada vez más molesta, talvez al punto de tirar los platos, a medida que su frustración aumenta. Cuando finalmente ha sido demasiado para ella, Martha le habla a su invitado! Sólo para agregarle rudeza a sus sentimientos de ira e irritación. Abrumada por la responsabilidad de servir a su invitado, ella se olvidó de quién era su invitado. Al hacer esto, Martha ignoró las reglas básicas de hospitalidad, y por eso Jesús la regañó.
Entonces, ¿cómo servimos al Señor represen-tado en las personas con las que nos encontra-mos cada día? ¿Interactuamos con amabilidad o refunfuñamos al hacer la tarea? ¿Ofrecemos un banquete o la comida amarga de nuestras quejas? Sabiendo que el Reino de los Cielos espera a sus siervos fieles, debemos servir al Señor con alegría.

Si bien nuestro llamado es servir al Señor a través de los demás, tenemos una opción en la forma en que cumplimos la tarea. Aquellos que sirven con alegría serán recompensados de la mejor manera.
