O Come Emmanuel, May We Recognize You.
Today’s gospel begins with John the Baptist sending his disciples to Jesus. They are supposed to ask Jesus if He is the Messiah. Isn’t that a little bit odd? John already knew the answer. Why did he send them to ask Jesus?
Like any really good teacher, John the Baptist was nudging the disciples to find the answer on their own. He put the idea in their head that Jesus could be the Messiah. By the time they reached Jesus, I’m sure those disciples had discussed, analyzed, and evaluated everything they knew about the Messiah from scripture and added in all they had heard about Jesus. When Jesus replied to their inquiry, He confirmed the conclusion they had already reached. John the Baptist helped the disciples recognize Jesus in a way they may not have considered on their own.
If John the Baptist sent us out today, where would we find the Messiah? Really think about it for a while. Do we recognize His presence in those around us and, more importantly, do others recognize Him in us? How hard would they have to look?

Sometimes we have to be nudged a bit to look at things in a different way. Let’s use the remainder of this Advent season to find new ways to recognize and acknowledge the presence of our Lord in ourselves and others.
Oh Ven Emmanuel, Que te Reconozcamos.
El evangelio de hoy comienza con Juan el Bautista enviando sus discípulos a Jesús. Se supone que deben preguntarle a Jesús si Él es el Mesías. ¿No es eso un poco extraño? Juan ya sabía la respuesta. ¿Entonces, por qué los envió a que le preguntaran a Jesús?
Como cualquier buen maestro, Juan el Bautista estaba motivando a los discípulos a encontrar la respuesta por ellos mismos. Él les puso la idea en la cabeza de que Jesús podría ser el Mesías. Para cuando ellos llegaron donde Jesús, de seguro ya habían discutido, analizado y evaluado todo lo que sabían sobre Jesús a través de las escrituras y en añadidura todo lo que habían escuchado sobre Él. Cuando Jesús les respondió a su pregunta, les confirmó la conclusion a la que ya habían llegado. Juan el Bautista ayudó a los discípulos a reconocer a Jesús por su propia cuenta, de una manera que quizás ellos no imaginaban.
Si Juan el Bautista nos enviara hoy, ¿dónde encontraríamos al Mesías? Piensa en esto seriamente por un momento. ¿Reconocemos Su presencia en aquellos alrededor nuestro? Y más importante aún, ¿los demás Lo reconocen en nosotros? ¿Qué tran profundo tendrían ellos que mirar?

A veces se nos tiene que empujar un poco para que podamos ver las cosas de una manera diferente. Usemos el resto de esta temporada de Adviento para encontrar nuevas maneras de reconocer la presencia de nuestro Señor dentro de nosotros y en los demás.
