Holy Mary, Mother of God.
On this eighth day, or Octave of Christmas, we reflect on Mary as we celebrate the solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. This title, rooted in Scripture, was first proclaimed by Mary’s cousin Elizabeth, when she greeted Mary as the “Mother of My Lord.” Some in the early years of the Church questioned this title. After all, how can God have a mother? Elizabeth was the first to acknowledge that Mary was carrying the child who was destined to be both human and divine. She recognized that Mary had found favor with God in being chosen as the Theotokos or “God-bearer” in Greek, and she realized Mary’s great faith in accepting the divine gift.
Because of Mary, “God sent his Son, born of a woman” (Gal 14:4). It is thanks to Mary that Jesus is fully human, with flesh and bones like ours, and also fully divine. Mary is human, one of us, yet she is given a unique role in the history of salvation.
The angel Gabriel called Mary “favored one,” which is translated as one who is filled with grace. Like Gabriel, we too acknowledge that Mary was filled with grace, and like Elizabeth, we honor Mary as the Holy Mother of God.
As we continue to celebrate Christmas time and as we begin this New Year, let us reflect on Mary as a model of holiness today and throughout 2023. Ponder the ways this new year might be a time of grace for you.

In this New Year, let us seek Mary’s maternal compassion and protection. Holy Mary, Mother of God, you are chosen to be not only the Mother of God but also our Mother. Pray for us.
Santa María, Madre de Dios.
En este octavo día, u Octava de Navidad, reflexionamos sobre María mientras celebramos la solemnidad de María, la Santa Madre de Dios. Este título, arraigado en las Escrituras, fue proclamado por primera vez por la prima de María, Isabel, cuando saludó a María como la “Madre de mi Señor”. Algunos en los primeros años de la Iglesia cuestionaron este título. Después de todo, ¿cómo puede Dios tener una madre? Isabel fue la primera en reconocer que María estaba embarazada del niño que estaba destinado a ser tanto humano como divino. Reconoció que María había encontrado el favor de Dios al ser elegida como Theotokos o “portadora de Dios” en griego, y se dio cuenta de la gran fe de María al aceptar el don divino.
Por María, “Dios envió a su Hijo, nacido de mujer” (Gal 14,4). Es gracias a María que Jesús es plenamente humano, con carne y huesos como los nuestros, y también plenamente divino. María es humana, una de nosotros, pero se le da un papel único en la historia de la salvación.
El ángel Gabriel llamó a María “la predilecta”, que se traduce como la que está llena de gracia. Como Gabriel, también nosotros reconocemos que María fue llena de gracia, y como Isabel, honramos a María como la Santa Madre de Dios.
A medida que continuamos celebrando la Navidad y comenzamos este Año Nuevo, reflexionemos sobre María como modelo de santidad hoy y durante todo el 2023. Reflexiona sobre las formas en que este nuevo año podría ser un tiempo de gracia para ti.
