Am I a good Samaritan?
The parable of The Good Samaritan is a familiar one. Even very young Catholics can recite the story and pick out the Samaritan as the hero. Have you ever noticed that when Jesus asked the scholar to identify the victim’s neighbor, the scholar does not say, “the Samaritan”? He is in shock that a Samaritan, the least expected of the three, was the good guy. So instead of identifying the man as a Samaritan, he replies that the neighbor is the one who acted with mercy. This, of course, is Jesus’ whole point. It doesn’t matter who we are, where we come from, or what we believe. What matters is what we do for one another.
What about the other two travelers? Perhaps they assumed “the victim was already dead” or “there was no doctor in the next town.” We, humans are great at rationalizing. We can come up with a dozen reasons to explain our decisions. Yet the thoughts of the other travelers never made it into this story. In the telling of the parable, Jesus emphasizes what the other two travelers do...NOTHING!
So am I a good samaritan? Am I the person who acts when I see another in need? Am I the type of person who puts the needs of others before my own? By answering these questions we will better understand the message of Jesus.
The Mini Message:
The Samaritan was not the good guy because of where he came from but because of what he did. Let our actions towards one another allow us be identified as “a good Samaritan.”

¿Soy Yo un buen Samaritano?
La parábola del Buen Samaritano es muy conocida. Hasta los católicos más jóvenes pueden recitar la historia y elegir al samaritano como el héroe. ¿Alguna vez has notado que cuando Jesús le pide al maestro de la ley que identifique quién es el prójimo de la víctima, ese maestro de la ley no responde “el Samaritano”? Y es porque el maestro de la ley estaba sorprendido que de los tres personajes, el samaritano, fuera el hombre bueno. Entonces, en lugar de identificarlo como samaritano, su respuesta fue que el prójimo es el que actuó con misericordia. Esto, por supuesto, es el punto al que quería llegar Jesús. No importa quiénes somos, de dónde venimos o en qué creemos. Lo que importa es qué hacemos los unos por los otros.
¿Qué pasa con los otros dos viajeros? Quizás ellos asumieron que “la víctima ya estaba muerta” o que “no había doctores en el pueblo vecino”. Los humanos somos muy buenos para justificarnos. Podemos tener muchas razones para explicar nuestras decisiones. Sin embargo, los pensamientos de los otros viajeros nunca se conocieron en esta historia. Al contar la parábola, Jesús enfatiza lo que hacen los otros dos viajeros… NADA!
Entonces, ¿Soy yo un buen samaritano? ¿Soy la persona que actúa cuando veo a otro en necesidad? ¿Soy yo el tipo de persona que antepone las necesidades de otros a las mías? Al responder estas preguntas entenderemos mejor el mensaje de Jesús.

El Reino está aquí y ahora. Comencemos simplemente dándole a Jesús, nuestro Rey, el crédito que le corresponde, reuniendo a Su pueblo para agradecerle y alabarle.
