Christian Initiation

"The sharing in the divine nature given to men through the grace of the Christ bears a certain likeness to the origin, development, and nourishing of natural life. The faithful are born anew by Baptism, strenghtened by the sacrament of Confirmation, and receive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life. By means of these sacraments of Christian initiation, they thus receive in increasing measure the treasures of the divine life and advance toward the perfection of charity." - The Catechism of the Catholic Church 1212

The Christian Initiation of Adults follows the restored rites of the ancient Catechumenate. A community of inquirers forms each fall, and each proceeds at his or her own pace to Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at Easter. Adult Catholics seeking Confirmation also participate in this process.

The Christian Initiation of Children aged seven and older takes place in a community of young inquirers who prepare for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil.

The Baptism of Infants is celebrated in English on the second and fourth Sunday of each month and in Spanish on the first and third Sunday of each month, except during Lent, after the 12:00 noon Mass for children of registered parishioners who participate in a program of formation. Godparents are also encouraged to attend this formation if possible.

First Reconciliation (Winter) and First Communion (Spring) are normally celebrated in Grade 2. Special programs are offered for children in higher grades who need to be prepared for these sacraments.

Confirmation is conferred upon young people in the tenth grade and older who express a desire for this sacrament of initiation, and who demonstrate readiness by their regular Sunday worship and by active participation in a retreat-based program of formation offered in addition to the regular LIFE TEEN program.
