Childhood Religious Education

Children's Initiation
The Christian Initiation of Children is the process by which children over the age of seven who are unbaptized or who have had little or no previous religious education become fully initiated into the Catholic Church. This two year journey includes weekly sessions for the child or teen seeking initiation as well as family sessions which include parents, sponsors and godparents at appropriate times during the year.

Elementary Religious Education
Elementary Religious Education offers programs for children preschool through grade five. The Preschool Religious Readiness program helps young children take their first steps on their journey of faith. The Kindergarten religious education program integrates scripture and doctrine to help children relate the richness of our Catholic faith to their everyday lives. Students in grades one through five participate in a formation program designed to help them recognize the presence of God in their own lives, discern the presence of God in all people and circumstances, recognize the presence of God in their experiences of God’s creation, and live as people for others. This is accomplished through weekly classroom sessions that incorporate the use of prayer, scripture, Catholic social teaching, and liturgy. In addition, all grade levels participate in monthly and seasonal service projects to aid people in need locally and globally.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) pro-gram is another approach to the religious formation of elementary level children. Based on the conviction that God and the child are in relationship, CGS is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the Church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. Children gather in an "atrium," a room prepared for them, which contains simple yet beautiful materials that they use in their formation. It is their classroom, designed as a hands-on place of preparation for involvement in the larger worshipping community. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd students also participate in monthly and seasonal service projects to aid people in need locally and globally.

There are two levels of CGS:
Level 1: ages 3-1/2 to 5; Level II: ages 6 to 9.
